My First CBG

Postby John Geeeee » Sat Aug 27, 2011 4:09 pm

Hi All,

I have been following and listening to Steves music for about a year now but without geting into the detail, if you know what I mean  A month ago I bought a new Blueray player and there is a load of Sony Apps built in and one of them had one of Steves entire concerts from Australia. After seeing what he can do I am even more hooked and I am happy to say that I now have tickets for his upcoming gig at the Manchester Apollo in October.

After trawling the internet a bit more I found the Cigar Box kits available from Tonetech in the UK. So I ordered one and built it over the last two weeks. Now I must admit that I can't play guitar, I have tried in the past but loose the will and didn't have the patience. I saw the cult and history behind CBG's and thought I would try again. So here are some pictures of my very first CBG built by my own clumsy hands. Now all I have to do is learn to play it  I have also added a short video at the end of me learning my first lick so you can hear how my first project sounds.

Well thanks for looking and I hope you like my first efforts.
Cheers
John Geeeee

Hey John,

welcome to the forum - thanks for joining in.

Hey, that cbg you made looks and sounds great - I'm well impressed! I hope you keep on learning to play and practising - when you got some more licks perhaps you'll post 'em - we got an open mic area that just waiting for your tunes!

Cheers for now,

davey.

Hey John,

That is a great sounding CBG, well done. I'll be at the Apollo gig as well so maybe I'll see you there... I'll be at the front :D

Take the CBG along, maybe Steve will sign it for you after the gig ;)

Well, i just found this topic and it is a really nice Cigarbox Guitar!!

Very nice done and very detailed!!

I am wondering what is used inside as a pick up?

As I can not see a regular guitar pick-up, but I can see a volumeknob, so it is something like a Piëzo or a microphone?

The sound is really good!!

1 tip for the (also selfmade?) bottle neck: I think it plays more comfortable when you place it upside down on your finger.
Yes, I play that Doghouse Boogie!

Hi Henri,
Thanks for the kind comments. There is a piezo disc thingy inside the box just under the bridge area.

I enjoyed building it and I love the sound, but why do I find it so scary to pick it up and learn to play it?

Well John,

just tune it in G (GBD = classic Muddy Waters tune) and you will for sure enjoy playing e.g Hoochie Coochie Man :)
