Neck reset

Postby StevieB » Tue Jun 05, 2012 9:59 pm

Need to do a neck reset on an old 19th century romantic guitar. Never done one before. Read up on the net and books on how to do it and it doesn't seem to be too daunting. I know I have to get steam into the void behind the neck dovetail at about the 13th fret and I know how to do it. However has any one done this before and how did you supply the steam? Pressure cookers or expresso machines seem to be the generators of choice. If any one has any advice, tips or guidance it certainly would be appreciated.

After time the tension on the neck by the strings will cause the action to become too high and no amount of trimming the saddle will reduce it. This is when you need to reset the neck. What you do is to remove the neck and shave off a couple of mm from the neck heel or from the dovetail. To remove the neck you need to melt the glue holding it to the body, as this is normally animal hide glue it is easily done by warming until it is tacky when the neck will slip off.

Well that's the theory, as I said not tried it myself yet.

Ghanks for the links. I think I'll shy away from pouring hot water over an antique guitar. I've got an expresso machine so I think I'll be using that with some rubber tubing and a football inflator needle.

Not likely to be done before the summer holidays, I'll try to remember to take pictures and post the results.Image/

Thanks, I think so too, which is why I don't want to bugger it up. Thinking of looking around the boot fairs for a cheapo guitar for run through. Just spotted another beauty on ebay that needs TLC, asked for more pictures as it may just be beyond my abilities.
